SUMMARY:Living Freedom forum: Does AI undermine human agency?
DESCRIPTION:This event is free but please register using the form below. \nIn a recent article\, Abhishek Saha argues AI has evolved beyond simple predictive machine learning to solve complex problems by synthesising a broad array of information. This brings AI closer to human learning\, which relies on interpretation rather than mere repetition. \nYet\, learning ability alone does not yield agency or control. Lacking a framework for genuine choices\, AI remains an instrument of human intent\, usable for both creative and destructive ends. \nHowever\, Jacob Coxon\, a former researcher at OpenAI and Anthropic\, left both firms over concerns about responsible development. He shifts the debate to political economy: if AI reshapes economies and reduces the value of human work\, should such profound societal shifts be left to tech executives operating in their own interests rather the wider public interest? \nAI raises two distinct concerns: conventional risks and existential ones. The existential challenge concerns human purpose\, which is deeply tied to creation and problem-solving. As AI’s productive power surpasses human labour\, it disrupts the link between the economy and individual identity\, leaving citizens struggling to find meaning without traditional work. \nEven as machine capabilities grow\, AI still lacks self-directed drive. Why do we so readily grant machines human-like agency rather than recognising their reliance on human choices? The central dilemma remains: when AI reshapes society\, is it safer to trust private companies or governments to manage the transition? And who ultimately decides how AI is commanded: designers\, regulators\, investors or individuals? \nSPEAKERS INCLUDE\nAbhishek Saha\nprofessor of mathematics at Queen Mary University of London; founder member\, London Universities’ Council for Academic Freedom\nSandy Starr\ndeputy director\, Progress Educational Trust; author\, AI: Separating Man from Machine \nCHAIR\nJake Weston\npartnerships and PR manager\, Academy of Ideas\n \nREGISTER\nPlease enable JavaScript in your browser to complete this form.Name *FirstLastEmail *Submit
